Martial Arts can be considered as systems of passed down practices and traditions of training for combat. While most people picked them up for various reasons, martial arts all share ONE objective, that is to defeat any potential aggressor physically whether it is for defense or otherwise.
There are a couple of martial arts that are closely associated to spiritual or religious beliefs such as Hinduism or Buddhism while others have their own spiritual or non-spiritual code of honour. As time passed, many martial arts are practised either competitively or as a form of dance.
Why Should Everyone Be Involved?
If you see the need to defend yourself in situations ranging from unwanted or harassing comments to physical abuse and rape, then martial arts may be the thing you are looking for. Simply put, Martial Arts comprise of a set of verbal, psychological, and physical techniques and strategies that you can use to protect yourself and loved ones.
The training that comes with it helps with everyday assertiveness and boundary setting as well as preparing you to fight back in physical attacks. Self defense training, as some would call it, incorporate an understanding of the kinds of violence most often experienced by most people such as women and the common social and psychological barriers that people face in learning to fight back.
This part is not usually well discussed but people learning self-defense or martial arts gain both physical and verbal defense skills that they can use against an attacker. Moreover, it builds on the self-esteem and confidence of most people.
Martial Arts classes give most people the opportunity to explore the broad spectrum of emotions that often arise when we start to understand the level of violence in our society. It is an excellent vehicle for exploring anger, grief, and fear, and for tapping into the joy that comes from finding your voice and discovering your own internal power.
Hence martial arts should be for every one and any one.
